Northborough – Children of all ages gave their computer games a break Aug. 14 to attend Family Fun Day at Ellsworth-McAfee Park in Northborough. An afternoon of old-fashioned games and activities was held as part of the town’s year-round 250th anniversary celebration.
Among the games of yesteryear played were cat’s cradle, checkers, dominos, jacks, tiddlywinks and pick-up sticks. Before competing in a doughnut eating contest, kids worked up their appetites with activities such as jump rope, leapfrog, pass the potato, sack races and tug of war. They also got the chance to play with old-fashioned toys and decorate their bicycles or strollers.
Meanwhile, kids and their families learned historical lessons from the Sudbury Companies of Militia & Minute, and a Native American culture presentation with songs and dance.
Volunteering to play with the children were Algonquin Regional High School students of the Community Action Program. Refreshments were available from Northborough Youth Soccer Association volunteers.
