Marlborough – Ryan Development is seeking approval for a special permit to construct an automatic car wash at the Apex Center on Route 20. The proposal, specifying a 2,470 square foot three-bay facility with vacuum stands, was introduced to city councilors at their Sept. 13 meeting. It is planned to stand next to a Chick-fil-A restaurant and will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to Kevin Eriksen, general counsel for Ryan Development.
Councilors expressed concern over the possible impact the facility could have on the city’s sewer treatment plant and asked that a study of that situation be brought to the Urban Affairs Committee when a review of the request takes place.
“We want to be certain it will operate safely, see what the building will look like, and then review an operational plan,” said Urban Affairs Chair Joseph Delano.
Developers of the 475,000 square foot Apex Center have begun clearing the area off Route 20, west of Glen Street. The complex will include two hotels, office buildings, restaurants and an indoor recreation and entertainment area that will feature a bowling alley, car racing, laser tag, billiards and a rock climbing wall. It is expected to bring over $1 million in revenue to the city each year, according to Delano.
