Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services Gala draws crowd

Shrewsbury – Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services (SYFS) held its 7th Annual Gala Celebration at St. John's High School in Shrewsbury Feb. 26. The event was a sellout, with 300 in attendance. The gala, “An Evening of Inspiration,” was chaired by Shrewsbury residents Kelly Marcimo and Ron Everitt, while Jen Carter and Steve Donovan from “The Morning Show” on 104.5 WXLO FM were the masters of ceremony.

Attendees enjoyed a meal catered by Struck and were entertained by members of the Shrewsbury High School Jazz Ensemble led by Band Director Brian Liporto.

Recognition was given to deserving members of the community. Ted Coghlin introduced the Irving J. Donahue family, who received the 2011 Harry S. Cutting Award. Patriarch Irving James Donahue was honored posthumously along with his surviving wife, Barbara (Babs) and their two daughters, Judy and Susan. The 2011 Outstanding Youth Awards went to four Shrewsbury High School seniors – Hannah Boudreau, John McBride, Sara Pedersen and Leland Smith.

Several dignitaries were present including: U.S. Rep. James McGovern; Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray; State Rep. Matthew Beaton, R- Shrewsbury; Shrewsbury Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Sawyer; Shrewsbury Town Moderator Chris Mehne; Shrewsbury selectmen Moria Miller, Jim Kane, Moe Depalo and John Lebeaux; and School Committee members Sandy Fryc and Erin Canzano.

Funds raised by the gala will help SYFS continue to provide programs and services for the community. SYFS, a 501c3 private, nonprofit community social services agency, provides professional support and social services to children, parents and individuals in times of need, regardless of their ability to pay. This year's Fund in Need supports the DAVID Anti Bullying Institute, serving the region with direct services, re- search and resources related to addressing the issue of bullying.
