Westborough starts its own Repair Café

Westborough - The Westborough Public Library and the Rotary Club of Westborough are organizing the first Repair Café at the Westborough Library, 55 W. Main St., Saturday, March 19, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Knowledgeable volunteer repair experts will be available to help make all possible repairs free of charge, except for needed parts. Small appliances, vacuum cleaners, lamps, computers, clothes, bikes, toys, outdoor power equipment, and anything that is broken is welcome and can most likely be repaired. Knives, scissors, and garden tools can also be sharpened.

Free training program to be offered for Alzheimer’s caregivers

Westborough - Health Care Staffing, a Care Solutions' Company, is hosting a free 12- hour training for caregivers, "Caring for People with Alzheimer's: A Habilitation Curriculum". The course takes place over six consecutive weekly two-hour programs, held on Tuesdays, from 9-11 a.m., Oct. 14 to Nov. 18. (Oct. 14, 21, and 28 and Nov. 4, 11, and 18.) The curriculum is based on the model of dementia care called Habilitation Therapy, developed by Paul Raia, Ph.D. and Joanne Koenig-Coste. It can help caregivers make better connections to loved ones with dementia, resulting in improved quality of life.

Northborough woman ‘shines the light’ for girls in Kenyan villages

Northborough - Shine the Light Kenya is a nonprofit that was founded in 2011 by Lizzie Maina to help educate children in rural schools and ensure that they have the necessary tools to succeed. Having relocated from Africa to the United States in 1995, Maina immersed herself into the community and her passion for helping others. Her grandfather started a school in Kenya and she has committed herself to continuing to help those in the surrounding communities. She currently works as a senior caregiver in Worcester and enjoys spending time with the elderly.
