Marlborough – After a devastating fire that destroyed three transport vans belonging to the nonprofit agency Employment Options, Inc., the organization's management is now trying to determine what steps to take next to help their clientele. Police and fire officials believe a man parked his car early Saturday morning, June 16, in an empty spot between two of Employment Options" vans at the agency's 82 Brigham St. location. He then allegedly set his car on fire, which then quickly spread to the two vans next to his as well as a third van, completely destroying all of the vehicles. The man perished in the fire.

Marlborough - More than 500 residents responded to the invitation to apply for open positions at 30 local companies at the "Marlborough Works" Job Fair held Wednesday, June 18, at the Marriott Courtyard – Marlborough. Representatives from locally-based companies talked with job-seekers, explained their open positions, and accepted resumes. The successful event, co-sponsored by Mayor Arthur Vigeant, the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), andQuinsigamondCommunity College, was designed to assist unemployed city residents and those looking for a career change.

Marlborough's Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant, headed by interim Chief Operator Scott Rossi, processes about 3 million gallons of water a day sourced from the entire east side of the city, plus accommodating septic pumper trucks from both Marlborough and Northborough. It is a daunting challenge to deal with so much waste and the accompanying smells, and Rossi admitted as much. "It's not a glamorous job...it's a very important job," he said.

Marlborough - For the 38th year in a row, the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce held its annual golf tournament at the Marlborough Country Club June 5. The event raises money to sponsor various local projects such as the Women's Business Council, the government affairs committee, the ambassador program and the business connection program. It is one of the longest running and most entertaining golf events in the area. The benefit featured an all-day putting contest, a hole-in-one contest, a raffle, many prizes and complimentary, humorous caricatures of each golfer. Volunteers joined Chamber of Commerce staff members to organize the program and make sure everything ran smoothly. President Susanne Leeber and Executive Vice President Cathy Mogavero were on hand to thank the many participants who supported the Open and all the volunteers who made this fundraiser successful.

Marlborough – The City Council denied a request from Councilor-at-Large Kathleen Robey to cut $500,000 from the Marlborough Public Schools" budget at the council's June 4 meeting. Robey, a former 16-year member of the School Committee, said that in reviewing the schools" budget she discovered money in several accounts that had not been spent. Since it is expected there will be additional state funding and Medicaid reimbursements for the school in the upcoming year, the requested budget cut would not hinder services, she said. Ward 1 Councilor Joseph Delano disagreed and said not only would the cut send the wrong message to the community; it may also result in possible layoffs and eliminate pay increases, he added. Robey then amended her motion to eliminate $250,000 instead of $500,000 from the budget. During a prolonged discussion, the council members noted the need for more accountability regarding the school budget process but ultimately defeated the request, 5-6. Delano, Council President and Councilor-at-Large Patricia Pope, Ward 6 Councilor Edward Clancy, Ward 7 Councilor Donald Landers, Councilor-at-Large Mark Oram and Ward 4 Councilor Robert Tunnera all voted against the measure.

Marlborough - An opportunity to attract cultural enterprises, business and new jobs growth, enhance property values, and expand tourism - all without taxing residents - is one step closer after the City Council endorsed a Massachusetts Cultural Council District application at its June 4 meeting. The designation is offered through the state's Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) and was first brought to the attention of the City Council by Ward 6 City Councilor Edward Clancy.

Marlborough – School Committee members are concerned that an accreditation process for Marlborough High School (MHS) is being stalled by Dr. Anthony Pope, the superintendent of the Marlborough Public Schools, they said at a meeting May 31. According to Mayor Arthur Vigeant, who also serves as School Committee chair and member Katherine Hennessey, after a review was conducted at MHS by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) in 2010, the school was issued a "warning" status. At that time, NEASC submitted a list of concerns to the school district for its review. The district was then to submit a report with recommendations on how to remedy those concerns back to NEASC by November of last year.

Marlborough – At a recent meeting, the City Council agreed to consider a resolution on behalf of the Marlborough Downtown Village, to endorse the application for a Massachusetts Cultural Council District, a designation offered through the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The matter was considered at the recommendation of Ward 6 City Councilor Edward Clancy. The Marlborough Downtown Village committee has met over the past several months, with the assistance of the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation, to develop the application, which, if accepted, will help to promote Main Street and also make it easier to apply for grant funding when available.

Marlborough – Mayor Arthur Vigeant welcomed residents age 60 and over to the 36th annual Mayor's Senior of the Year Dinner, held May 23 at Marlborough High School (MHS). He had participated in the event previous years as city council president. This year as mayor, Vigeant expressed his personal appreciation for the opportunity to recognize a resident, who needed to be at least age 90, for outstanding contributions to the city. "As I go through my first year in office, I enjoy going to different events, but the Senior of the Year Dinner is really special to me," Vigeant told the guests. "There are many seniors who have done so much for this community over the years. Who is that special person I can name who went the extra mile?"
