Northborough optometrist to retire; follows vision for his life

Northborough - Dr. Richard Martino, or "Dr. Dick" as his patients affectionately address him, will retire from his optometric practice Sept. 15 after 38 years. Martino, who is the chaplain for the Northborough Fire Department and assistant campus minister at Assumption College, has decided to pursue an opportunity for full-time ministry in the church.

Parade and fireworks to return to Northborough's Applefest celebration

The parade was cancelled outright due to the downtown road renovations. The fireworks fell victim to a scourge of West Nile Virus carrying mosquitoes that plagued the region. Northborough Water and Sewer Commission to vote on rate increases

Northborough - The Northborough Water and Sewer Commission will vote on the proposed water and sewer rate increases during its Sept. 24 meeting, according to town officials. The commission held a public hearing on Aug. 27 to consider the proposed increases in water and sewer rates. Town officials are proposing a 20 percent increase in sewer rates, as well as a $10 base fee per household each quarter for water capacity. No one from the public attended the hearing to voice their opinion.

Northborough to hold Applefest Sept. 20-22

Northborough – In just a few weeks, Northborough will be celebrating one of its biggest and most anticipated events of the year – Applefest. Organizers are now finalizing the plans for the three-day celebration which will be held Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 22. The festival was started in 1991 by a small group of volunteers who aimed to promote the downtown businesses as well as acknowledge the town's agricultural roots. Since that time, it has grown into a beloved weekend extravaganza with participation from local businesses, nonprofits, and just about every town group imaginable.

Worcester - Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley has released this statement regarding a Northborough man who has been sentenced for multiple environmental in connection with operating an illegal dump: A Northborough man has been sentenced to serve one year in jail with the sentence suspended with five years of probation for operating an illegal dumping site, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced today. The judge also ordered that Santo Anza Jr., age 52, of Northborough, remove all solid waste from the site. Anza is also prohibited from working with any solid waste in any community for the next five years.

Northborough to open Wachusett Aqueduct for public use

Northborough - The Board of Selectmen unanimously voted to approve during its Aug. 12 meeting a permit for the town of Northborough to open the Wachusett Aqueduct to the public. Town Planner Kathy Joubert and Trails Committee Chair Bob Mihalek presented to selectmen the latest on a nearly year-long effort by the town to open the aqueduct for recreational trail use. "We'se at the final stages as far as the paperwork is concerned," Joubert said.
