“Stand Down” helps local veterans

Shrewsbury – Nonprofit Veterans Inc. hosted its eighth annual Stand Down June 14 and 15, a weekend event at Independence Hall where in-need and homeless veterans and their families receive services to improve their quality of life.

Board determines easement not necessary

Shrewsbury - During a hearing at the regularly scheduled meeting of the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen June 11, a hearing to discuss obtaining an easement to run a town water main across private property was quickly concluded. Town Engineer Jack Perrault announced that the contractor hired to do the work had devised a way to run a water line along a public way, obviating the need for an abatement.

Local teen determined to help cousin battling cancer

Shrewsbury - Friends and family of those diagnosed with a serious illness, especially those that live far away, often feel helpless to be able to offer assistance and support. But when she learned that her cousin was diagnosed with a tumor for the second time in four years, Shrewsbury teenager Alannah "A.J." Laurence, 13, did not let distance deter her. At just 5 years old, in 2008, Alannah's cousin Darcy Cassidy, 9, of Meridian, Texas, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She was treated at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., and was cancer free until March, when two tumors were discovered on her spine.

Selectmen again postpone hearing regarding “unruly” dogs

Shrewsbury - A hearing on how to deal with complaints of unruly dogs in the Westmont Road neighborhood was again postponed during the June 11 meeting of the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen. Shrewsbury Animal Control Officer Leona M. Pease had brought before the selectmen the case of complaints from neighbors of Rolland Demers, of 31 Westmont Rd., about unleashed dogs "Saydee" and "Pesky" roaming the neighborhood and allegedly causing problems for other property owners. This hearing was to dispose of the case through action of the selectmen.

Shrewsbury/Hudson – Hudson resident Terry Cassidy has been hired as the new executive director of Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services (SYFS), a nonprofit social service agency. She brings to the position her clinical expertise and 15 years of executive leadership in nonprofit administration. A licensed independent clinical social worker, Cassidy received her bachelor's degree in social work from Salem State College and a master's degree from Boston University.

Local teacher “unveils” her second novel

Region - Lauren Grimley of Shrewsbury never really liked fantasy novels when she was growing up in Grafton. "Although I had a vivid imagination, I was never a fan of fantasy while growing up. I have my middle school students to thank for turning me into a "fang" fan," she said. Grimley, who has taught seventh-grade English at Trottier Middle School in Southborough for 11 years, just released her second urban fantasy novel, "Unveiled." The novel is the sequel to "Unforeseen," which was published last year, and continues the story of heroine Alex Crocker, who has a supernatural gift and lives among vampires.
