Marlborough – The 10th Police Chase 5K, presented by the Marlborough Police Patrol Officers Association in memory of Sgt. William Kirby, returned Sept. 7 after a three-year hiatus. This year, 148 runners and walkers completed the race to benefit the city's new K-9 program. Fundraising continued as more guests joined the post-race activities including raffles, live musical entertainment, and a cookout donated and prepared by the Fraternal Order of Marlborough Eagles Aerie #3565. The event took place at the Marlborough Moose Family Center, which was offered free of charge by the organization for the fundraiser.

Shrewsbury ?In his much too short life, Andrew Paul "Drew" Stevens was a busy and active child who loved to be around people and play with his classmates at the Parker Road Preschool. The boy who would introduce himself as "Drew Paul Stevens with a V" also loved fire trucks and visiting the Shrewsbury Fire Department. Sadly, Drew passed away from an illness on April 27, 2012. He was only four years old. On Sept. 7, Parker Road staff and parents, town officials and members of the community gathered at the school to start the installation of a project dedicated in the little boy's memory, Drew's Dream Playground. Representatives from the Shrewsbury Home Depot and Marshfield-based company Childscapes also assisted in the event which was billed as "Build Day."

Westborough - It has been well documented the effects of therapy dogs on those needing comfort, whether they be children, elders, or victims of trauma. But as Westborough residents Tania and Bob Pano will tell you, although not as well known, cats can perform this type of work as well. Once a week, the couple, along with Cassie, their 8-year-old Golden Retriever, and Lynsey Lu and MacKenzie Connor, two Scottish Fold cats, visit with elders who live in senior communities in Westborough and Worcester. The "Therapy Trio," as the pets are known, also helped to provide comfort to those gathered near the finish of the Boston Marathon for eight straight weekends after the April 15 bombings.

Northborough - A stream of afternoon sun gleams on the smooth wood of the organ. Deep chords resonate throughout the hall, passing from the player's fingers tapping the keys to each historical artifact on the shelves. Llanda Richardson is getting her first chance to play a piece on the tracker organ at the Northborough Historical Society after its major restoration. The George Stevens organ works nearly as well as it did back in 1874 when it was built??"just in time for the Organ Concert Series at the Northborough Historical Society.

Shrewsbury – This year's Spirit of Shrewsbury festival will be a little less lively this year, with the unexpected absence of its master of ceremonies Kevork "Kev" Tevekelian, who passed away Aug. 29. He was 47. The Shrewsbury resident and father of three young boys had faced an eight-year battle with Multiple Myeloma, an incurable form of blood cancer. For 30 years he owned and operated Kev Tev Entertainment, where he worked as a disc jockey.

Shrewsbury – After Shrewsbury resident Scott Zenaro died at the much too young age of 36, no one would have blamed his parents, Ron and Carol, if they decided to hold onto their son's beloved custom-built motorcycle for sentimental reasons. Instead, the couple have decided to let go of the bike via a special raffle which will benefit an organization very dear to their hearts – the Lazarex Cancer Foundation – which they credit with helping to prolong their son's life after he was diagnosed with end stage Ewing's sarcoma. Although he was disabled, Scott lived a very full life, Ron said, working alongside him at his two stores, RAYCO Car Electronics in Shrewsbury and Auburn. Scott loved cars, motorcycles, snowmobiling, water skiing, playing golf, and playing the drums.

Northborough – The Mark Fidrych Foundation held its third annual Make Your Mark softball tournament Saturday, Aug 24. The foundation supports nonprofit organizations that give children with physical, mental and emotional challenges the chance to play sports, and is named for one of Northborough's best known and most loved residents. In 1976, he was named Rookie of the Year while playing with the Detroit Tigers.

Southborough - Local golfers are preparing to hit the green Monday, Sept. 16 for the 22nd annual Falconi Family Memorial Golf Tournament and awards banquet. The tournament, which will take place at Juniper Hill Riverside Golf Course (on the Lakeside Course) in Northborough, is the Southborough Senior Center's largest fundraiser of the year. The tournament will be a Florida-style scramble with golfers participating in a variety of games including longest-drive and closest to the pin competitions. Additionally, there will be hole-in-one prizes. A banquet with raffles and a silent auction will follow. Registration is $125 per golfer.

Worcester/Shrewsbury – A year has passed since construction began on the new Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge connecting Worcester and Shrewsbury via Route 9, and, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), the project is still expected to be completed in summer 2015.

Shrewsbury – Over 1,000 senior citizens came out on a beautiful summer day Aug. 17 to celebrate the Sheriff's Annual Senior Picnic. The event, hosted by Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis, was held at the Scandinavian Athletic Club (SAC PARK).

Marlborough – A dedication to jazz music didn's stop during summer break for 49 students entering grades six through 10. They attended the city's first Jazz Camp, conducted three hours daily from Aug. 5 to 9 at Marlborough High School (MHS). The camp was organized locally by Simon Harding, an instrumental music teacher at Whitcomb Middle School, who has been involved with a similar program in Mendon.

Westborough - Westborough High School (WHS) student-athletes showed their appreciation for their hometown by volunteering at various Westborough locations Aug. 20. as part of the first Rangers Community Service Day. Mia Natale and Addie Egan, both rising seniors and student-athletes, were the visionaries behind the day. Natale first came up with the idea of student-athletes trading a day of practice for a day of service after she and Egan attended a Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) conference last summer. Natale then presented the idea to the MIAA where she also serves on the Student Advisory Committee. The girls then started forming a plan last summer of a Rangers Community Service Day.

Shrewsbury – Fans of all sorts of vehicles enjoyed the opportunity to see them up close and personal at the Leicester/ Spencer Fraternal Order of the Eagles #4541's Classic Car Show at the Hebert Candy Mansion Aug. 18. 72 vehicles were entered into the show, which was entitled, "Meeting of the Minds," with prizes given out in a number of categories. The event was organized by Eagles" members Dan and Shelly Travers, in honor of Shelly's father, Donald P. Doherty, who passed away in 2002 from a brain aneurysm. Both Shelley and her brother Donald, have also had brain aneurysms.
