Marlborough's downtown gets a new park

Marlborough ?A vacant, overgrown lot on Main Street has been turned into a new park, thanks to a collaboration between the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the Marlborough Savings Bank. According to MEDC officials, the 167 Main St. lot has been vacant since the restaurant that was formerly there was destroyed in a fire in 2010. Landscapers cleared away overgrown brush and leveled the area to create an open space. The new park has several picnic tables as well.

Northborough resident trains for Pan Mass Challenge

Northborough - For midwife Dina Fraize, Mother's Day has a special meaning. In 1998, when Fraize was pregnant with her fifth child, her mother, Juanita Hayward, was diagnosed with colon cancer. Hayward, then 50, underwent surgery at UMass Memorial, performed by a Dana Farber doctor. "When my mother was diagnosed, my world came crashing down," Fraize said. "My insides felt like they dropped out of me. Mom was so young and had small grandchildren who were a huge part of her life. I just can't imagine being without my mom. She is my hero and my best friend. Everyone who knows her instantly loves her. She is so loving and nonjudgmental and kind."

Marlborough students care for their community

Marlborough - The week of April 30 through May 4 was "School Spirit Week" at Whitcomb Middle School, 25 Union St., in Marlborough. In light of the recent fire that ravaged the Lake Williams Condominiums on West Main Street and displaced five Whitcomb families, the theme for spirit week was "We Care." In addition to donations of clothing, dry goods (canned food, snacks), entertainment (cards, sports equipment), gift cards, household items (sheets, towels), suitcases and duffle bags, and toiletries, students had other opportunities to participate - in monetary contributions throughout the week. On Tuesday, for example, a $2 donation bought an entry to win one of 50 free passes to Roller Kingdom in Hudson, on Wednesday, students were encouraged to donate coins during lunch and on Thursday, a $1 donation bought the ability to wear a hat during the school day (something which is usually not permitted).

New co-ed Scouting option for Northborough, Southborough teens: Venture Crew 11

Northborough- Northborough and Southborough teens have a new option for outdoor adventure, called Venture Crew 11. This unit is different from other Boy and Girl Scouts in town because it is co-ed, and its core focus is adventure and even high-adventure. Venture Crew 11 activities include sailing, canoeing, zip lining, backpacking, or whatever the crew decides to tackle. Jeffrey Somers, of Northborough, along with McKinley Hackett, of Southborough, came up with the idea at a BSA training event last year. The two got to talking and found that they had similar situations with daughters in high school who were interested in doing a variety of outdoor activities, and were looking for an organization that would provide that. They then formed a group of like-minded adults and teenagers and have reformed Crew 11 Venture as a joint Northborough/Southborough unit.

Southborough resident is dedicated to Dobermans

When Laura McCarthy is not busy with her work responsibilities, she can be found playing with her Doberman Pinchers, Paris and Axel. Both are rescue dogs and inspired McCarthy to become a volunteer with Distinguished Dobermans Rescue. McCarthy, president of HealthSquared Consulting, LLC, a recruiting company focused on healthcare organizations, had always purchased Dobermans from breeders as puppies. But, when her last Doberman, Jewel, died unexpectedly of bone cancer, McCarthy and her husband decided to adopt their next dog from a rescue organization. With all of her children grown and living out of the house, there was plenty of room for a dog (or two). She reached out to several Doberman Pinscher rescues over the course of the next month and learned that Distinguished Dobermans Rescue (DDR) had a 10-month-old female available for adoption At the same time, an individual rescuer in Louisiana contacted her about a one-year-old red Doberman that would be euthanized unless someone stepped in to take him. Unfortunately, it turned out that this dog had heartworm, a parasitic roundworm, and was very ill. His chance of recovery was grim, so McCarthy elected to adopt the female in Rochester, N.Y. In April of 2008, Paris joined the McCarthy family.
