Humble hero credits “right spot, right time”

Like so many others on Dec. 24, 2012, Ted Coghlin and his granddaughter Roselyn were out doing last-minute errands. But when they pulled into the parking lot of the Stop & Shop on Route 9 in Shrewsbury, things quickly went awry when Coghlin suffered a sudden medical emergency. But thanks to the quick actions of one man, Charlie Lemay, what could have ended in tragedy instead ended in the best gift Coghlin and his family could ever get – his life was saved.

Wayside members pedal to end cancer for 10th year

Marlborough – Stationary bicyclists were compelled by personal reasons to participate in the 10th annual Pedal to End Cancer (formerly known as Spin for Hope), a three-hour event held March 2 at Wayside Racquet & Swim Club. In 10 years, Wayside has raised $172,269 and counting for the American Cancer Society.

Marlborough - The Friends of the Marlborough Public Library and the Assabet Valley Camera Club (AVCC) are gearing up for their 17th annual photography show. Area photographers who would like to participate may submit two photographs in black and white or color. All photos must be framed and/or matted and equipped with wire suitable for display hanging. Also, each photo must have a label affixed to the back showing the title, name of artist, address, phone number and purchase price if for sale. If sold, 15 percent of the purchase price will go to the Friends.

Zeh nurse makes “purple” promise

Northborough - The Marion E. Zeh School has been raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) for nine years. To date, students have collected over $17,000 for the "Pennies for Patients" campaign, which aims to involve kids by teaching them about community and helping others by joining in the fight against blood cancers. The service learning, character education and philanthropy program asks students to collect spare change over a three-week period. Campaign dates for Zeh were Jan. 28 to Feb. 22.

Ocean State Job Lot makes another sizeable donation to Worcester County Food Bank

Shrewsbury - The Worcester County Food Bank (WCFB) received a 33,000-pound food drop off from Ocean State Job Lot (OSJL) and General Mills June 3. The donation is a part of OSJL's "Three Square Meals" program. According to company officials, the program provides food donations at important times throughout the year. As the program has grown, the company has become a leading food bank supporter throughout New England.

Grafton – Work has started on the renovations for the Town House located on Grafton Common. The town voted overwhelmingly in May, 2015, to allocate $928,741 to the ongoing project, with $860,924 coming from unexpended bond proceeds from the new high school construction and $67,817 from free cash.

CEO to fundraise by bicycling for Big Brothers Big Sisters

Shrewsbury – When Jeffrey Chin of Shrewsbury began as chief executive officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/Metrowest in 2013, he also joined the agency’s team for the Rodman Ride for Kids. Now, he’s preparing for his third ride in September and a fundraising kickoff party in July. “I certainly ride recreationally on vacation, but don’t necessarily consider myself an avid cyclist,” he acknowledged. “In preparation for this event I do try to get on the bike two, three or four times prior to that weekend. The course itself isn’t especially tricky for a novice cyclist.”
