Northborough - This season, many Northborough seniors who are alone or impoverished will receive some holiday cheer thanks to the “Be a Santa to a Senior® “ program. Sponsored by the Northborough Home Instead Senior Care® office, the program brings together businesses, volunteers and members of the community to provide gifts and companionship for lonely and isolated seniors.

Special Olympian looks forward to a future “heavy” with promise

Shrewsbury - Sam Belinsky had just returned from his trip to New Jersey, where he participated in the powerlifting competition at the 2014 Special Olympics Summer Games. The 20-year-old Shrewsbury resident was tired but triumphant. He had come in second place in his weight class and had been awarded four silver medals, one for each lift: squat, bench, deadlift, and one for overall accumulated weight.

It didn't get any easier when a group of soldiers from the U.S. Marine Corps showed up and took over practice. “We didn't think they were coming because it took a while, and then they came and we were just like, ‘damn,’” Cowdrey said.

Northborough – The Mark Fidrych Foundation held its third annual Make Your Mark softball tournament Saturday, Aug 24. The foundation supports nonprofit organizations that give children with physical, mental and emotional challenges the chance to play sports, and is named for one of Northborough's best known and most loved residents. In 1976, he was named Rookie of the Year while playing with the Detroit Tigers.

Organ recipient and donor parents offer lifesaving message

Northborough/Shrewsbury – The marching units of the recent Spirit of Shrewsbury Fall Festival parade included over 40 volunteers of Donate Life New England. The group consisted of transplant recipients, donor families and others touched by donation. While their reasons for marching varied, they shared an understanding of the powerful message emblazoned on their T-shirts: "Donate Life."

Generations interacting to overcome language barrier

Northborough/Southborough – There is much more gained than is lost in the translations when a group of Chinese-speaking senior residents of Northborough meet every other week for a conversation circle with bilingual students of the Community Action Program (CAP) at Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS). Kelly Burke, director of the Northborough Senior Center, reached out to CAP while seeking assistance for residents who speak only Chinese. This is the second year that CAP students have been visiting the center to help seniors learn new technology. Burke approached the CAP faculty advisor, Eileen Palmer, who found students fluent in Chinese and interested in the idea of a conversation circle.
