Westborough father ‘on par’ to maintain his giving ways

Westborough - While Roy Meyer spends his week as the director of Software Quality Assurance at CA Technologies, much of his spare time is spent helping others. Meyer has lived in Westborough for the past 22 years with his wife, Nancy, and their children, Brian, 25, and Katie, 23. Katie, who was born with Down syndrome, started participating with the Shrewsbury Special Olympics when she was six years old. Today, she is a member of the Special Olympics ski and golf teams. She has also participated in swimming, gymnastics, soccer and basketball events. Meyer, who has coached the Shrewsbury Special Olympics golf and ski teams (five and 10 years respectively), has been an avid advocate for Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA).

Jacqueline Tidman, former Westborough Historical Commission chair, dies

Westborough – Jacqueline Tidman, who for many years served on Westborough's Historical Commission, passed away on Aug. 20, at the age of 87. She had been living with her daughter, Jeanne Dwyer Silvious, in Fredericksburg, Va. Tidman took great pride in her role of helping to preserve Westborough's history, including as a member of the Historical Commission, a group she was instrumental in helping to form in 1978. She served as chair for nearly three decades before retiring in 2006.

Rangers give back to Westborough

Westborough - Westborough High School (WHS) student-athletes showed their appreciation for their hometown by volunteering at various Westborough locations Aug. 20. as part of the first Rangers Community Service Day. Mia Natale and Addie Egan, both rising seniors and student-athletes, were the visionaries behind the day. Natale first came up with the idea of student-athletes trading a day of practice for a day of service after she and Egan attended a Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) conference last summer. Natale then presented the idea to the MIAA where she also serves on the Student Advisory Committee. The girls then started forming a plan last summer of a Rangers Community Service Day.

Westborough – Local officials and members of Westborough's business community gathered at the South Street Diner Aug. 14 to celebrate the town being named Google's 2013 eCity of Massachusetts. The award, acknowledging the town as the "digital capital" of the state, was presented to Town Manager Jim Malloy by Matt Dunne, Google's head of community affairs.

Westborough announces state hospital land price tag

Westborough – The Board of Selectmen approved a proposal during its Aug.13 meeting for the town to purchase the Westborough State Hospital property for $2.2 million. Before the deal can go through, the decision must next be approved by the voters at the October Town Meeting. The vote came on the heels of the first public announcement of the agreed upon price of the land between the town and the state, who have been in negotiations over the 95-acre property for approximately two years.

Westborough church group helps Pennsylvania residents in need

Westborough – This summer, 27 youth and seven adults, including parishioners from the Congregational Church of Westborough's Senior High Youth Group, traveled to Pennsylvania where they worked on a variety of programs to assist residents in need. According to one of the adult leaders, Art Sharkey, this was the eighth consecutive year the Westborough group has participated in a mission of this type. Over the course of the week-long program, the group split up to work at sites in Harbor Creek and Erie.

Westborough announces Town Hall relocation plans

Westborough – Town Hall, located at 34 West Main St., is slated to undergo a major $7.3 million renovation starting in September. As a result, the town offices located there will temporarily move to various locations. According to a press release from town officials, the move will take place in three phases. Departments will be closed to the public on the day of their move. Phase One will begin Friday, Sept. 6, with the relocation of the Historic Commission to the Westborough Public Library, 55 W. Main St. The commission will be closed Sept. 6; it will reopen Monday, Sept. 9, with temporary office hours Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
