Shrewsbury – The St. John’s High School Pioneers hosted the top-seeded Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) Tomahawks on Feb. 21 in Shrewsbury for the final game of the regular season. It was back and forth action all night long, including into overtime, but Algonquin ended up with the victory, 59-58.

The first period was a draw (10-10) but St. John’s opened it up in the second period to finish 28-17.  In the third period, the Pioneers were up by more than fifteen points at one time but the Tomahawks battled back to close in, with St. John’s holding onto a 38-35 lead. In the fourth period, the two teams battled back and forth with the Pioneers holding onto a 53-50 lead with 32 seconds left.  However, ARHS’s Brad Canova pulled in his own rebound off a foul shot and tied the game 53-53 in regulation, forcing a four minute OT.

In the OT the Pioneers held a slim lead until with just eighteen seconds left the Tomahawks went ahead, 59-58.  A block by Algonquin’s AJ Brodeur on Saint John’s last possession sealed it as the Tomahawks pulled out the win.

ARHS ended the regular season at 19-1, while St. John’s record was 14-6.
