Worcester – Helen C. (Karlon) Masiello, 97, of Worcester, passed away peacefully Monday, March 31, 2014 at Shrewsbury Crossings, surrounded by her loving family.
Helen was born in Palmer, a daughter of the late Martin and Christina (Grigis) Karlon. She grew up in Palmer and graduated from Palmer Schools, and eventually moved to Worcester where she met her beloved husband of 76 years, the late Dr. Carlo A. Masiello, who passed away June 16, 2013.
She worked for the State of Massachusetts at Worcester State Hospital in the payroll and personnel department as an administrative assistant for 20 years before her retirement in 1984.
She is survived by the family she treasured: daughter and son-in-law, Carole and Richard Costello of Shrewsbury; grandchildren, Carla Smith and her husband Scott of Worcester, Brian Costello and his wife Amanda of Shrewsbury; five great-grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Troiano, Putnam Emerson Costello, Scott and Sean Smith; a sister, Anne Kibrick of Newton; and several nieces, nephews and extended family. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Martin and Hank Karlon.
Helen was a member of the former St. Margaret Mary's Church, where she was very involved in the church committee and the women's guild. She was also a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
She was an avid painting who enjoyed her home in Marshfield along the beach. She enjoyed reading and Sunday family dinners.
Helen's funeral will be held Friday, April 4, from the Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., Worcester, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. 24 Mulberry St. Friends and relatives may visit with the family from 9 – 10:30 a.m. Friday morning in the funeral home prior to her Mass.
Flowers are welcome or in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Helen can be made to the St Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
