Northborough – On Nov. 10, the students at the Saint Bernadette School held a heartwarming tribute to all of the brave men and women that have served our country with a Veterans Day Program.
“This is my 11th year at Saint Bernadette and we have been doing this program since I arrived,” said Principal Deborah O’Neil. “It’s a very special day for me, primarily because my father was a Pearl Harbor survivor. Although he has been gone for some time, today means a lot. I think it is incredibly important that children today understand the sacrifices that are made and the benefits that they derive from that. I think it means an awful lot for us to just be able to say ‘thank you.’ We have people that come year after year but there are always new faces joining in this program.”
The program included several musical selections including “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “God Bless America,” and “Let There Be Peace on Earth.” The fourth-graders chorally read a piece written by Roger Robicheau titled, “The Pride of Our Country.” There was an official Posting of Colors that began the program followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
During one of the musical selections, the veterans were asked to stand when they heard
the anthem of the military branch in which they served.
The students made paper flowers and cards that they distributed to veterans and guests before the conclusion of the assembly.
“I think it is so important that today’s generation learn about the struggles that their ancestors had to face. The patriotic songs the students learned are inspiring and through music can bring generations together,” said music teacher Michael Jones.
“Thank you for the gift of family and our country. Bless those that put their lives in harm’s way,” Principal O’Neil said.
