Shrewsbury – Shrewsbury Electric and Cable Operations (SELCO) announced that it will be hosting the first Earth Day Farmers Market in Shrewsbury Friday, April 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Senior Center parking lot, 98 Maple Ave.
The event will include more than 20 vendors offering local products. The Shrewsbury Farmers Market, which typically operates on Wednesdays from June to October, is assisting SELCO with market planning and coordination.
“This is a great opportunity for people to enjoy an early-season market before the growing season kicks into full gear,” said Jackie Pratt, SELCO Marketing & Customer Care Manager. “We also hope this event will generate additional interest in the Shrewsbury Farmers Market that runs throughout the summer.”
According to Melisa Hollenback from the Shrewsbury Farmers Market Committee, “vendors will be offering a variety of items including syrup, honey, locally raised meat, baked goods, crafts, goat milk soap, organic skincare items, and so much more.”
Live music will be provided by Tom Q Acoustics and there will be food trucks onsite at the event. Several local community organizations will also have booths at the market.
In addition, SELCO will be giving away 100 free gray dogwood saplings to Shrewsbury residents at the event. Trees are available on a first-come, first-served basis. SELCO has hosted a tree giveaway each April for more than 10 years.
“This year we wanted to change things up and we saw the farmers market as a new and exciting way to engage the local community while still being able to distribute free trees,” Pratt explained.
Home Depot will be on hand to provide free CFL bulb recycling. Bring your old CFLs and other fluorescent light bulbs for easy recycling at the event. Residents are required to recycle CFLs, fluorescent bulbs and other bulbs that contain mercury, rather than disposing of them in regular household trash.
