Shrewsbury will not receive state library grant – yetShrewsbury will have to wait a bit longer for state grant monies for a projected library expansion. The town had hoped to receive monies from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) General Construction Provisional Grants Program this year but on July 14 it was announced that Shrewsbury is eighth on the waiting list.

The expansion would retain the section of the library constructed in 1903 and replace an addition built in 1979, as well as adding onto the current building. The project is estimated to cost $18.7 million – the town had hoped to receive nearly $8 million in grant monies to help offset the cost.

Voters had approved a measure earlier this year to approve $760,000 to purchase additional land for the proposed expansion.
