Worcester Polytechnic Institute announces Charles O. Thompson ScholarsRegion – The Massachusetts Academy of Mathematics & Science at WPI recently named local students as Charles O. Thompson Scholars at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The students, all residents of Shrewsbury, include Curtis Belmonte, Gregory Granito, Zachary King, Ganapathiram Thangavel Arivudainambi, and Linda Xu.

Named in honor of the first president of WPI, this honor recognizes outstanding performance by first-year students. To be eligible for membership, students must receive all As and Bs (with a minimum of six As) in their academic subjects during their first three terms at WPI.

Founded in 1865 in Worcester, WPI was one of the nation's first engineering and technology universities. There are 26 WPI project centers throughout North America and Central America, Africa, Australia, Asia, and Europe.
