Region – Today is Monday, July 2, the 183rd day of 2012. And not only that, we are now officially half-way through 2012! And today (or probably more accurately tonight), is an important night to look up to the skies – it is World UFO Day.
On this day in 1776, 12 of the 13 American colonies approved a resolution to declare independence from Great Britain. (The New York delegates abstained – they were unsure how their constituents would want them to vote at that point.) And of course, two days later, the Declaration of Independence, edited by Thomas Jefferson, was formally adopted.
One of the great mysteries of the 1930s occurred on this day in 1937 when the great American aviator Amelia Earhart and her navigator Frederick Noonan were reported missing over the Pacific Ocean. The two were attempting to fly around the world. Although there have been many theories, there has never been any concrete proof of what exactly did happen to the duo.
And on this day in 1964, President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act. This important piece of legislation prohibits racial discrimination in employment and education as well as outlawing racial segregation in public places.
Happy birthday to – actress Lindsay Lohan (1986); actor/director Larry David (1947); and NASCAR driver Richard Petty (1937).
