Region – The ?top-seed Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) Tomahawks boys’ basketball team hosted the fifth-seed St. John's High School Pioneers for the Mass. Central Division 1 semi-final at Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Harrison Gymnasium in Worcester on Mar 4. Just two weeks ago the Tomahawks had beaten the Pioneers in the last game of the regular season 59-58 in overtime.
The Tomahawks got out to an early lead but the Pioneers came back and dominated the first half, with the score 36-21 in St. John's favor. ?In the second half, Algonquin strengthened their defense and started to chip away at the lead until they came within three points (42-45) with 4:30 left. ?The two teams continued to battle and with 44.7 seconds remaining, St. John's led 49-48. ?The Pioneers” Kenny Harrington nailed a 3-pointer and Algonquin's ?Brad Canova answered but the Tomahawks were unable to score on their last possession. The final score was St. John's 52, ARHS 51.
St. John's now heads to the Central Division 1 final against third-seed Milford High School who earlier in the day stunned second-seed Wachusett Regional High School with a dramatic comeback victory, 46-44.
