Westborough – In their 56th meeting, the Westborough High School Rangers were seeking a third straight victory over the Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks in a Thanksgiving Day match-up.
Neither team scored in the first quarter, but Westborough’s Michael Heffernan scored on a run (Anthony Agreda point after) to get on the board first. Algonquin’s Eric Hart added a twenty-two yard field goal and the quarter ended with the Rangers up 7-3.
In the third quarter, Heffernan scored again (Agreda point after) but that was answered by the Tomahawks’ Kyle Hill on a thirteen yard passing play (Hart point after).
With just a little over a minute remaining in the game, Westborough stopped Algonquin and took the ball over, only to fumble and turn it over. On the very next play Algonquin’s Billy Polymeros scored on a twelve-yard run (Hart point after) to take a 17-14 lead. Despite a long kickoff return by Westborough’s Avery Andrews with a penalty, Westborough was unable to score from Algonquin’s twenty-five yard line.
With the 17-14 win, Algonquin (6-5) was awarded the Richard Walsh trophy and had their first winning season since 1997 when they went 7-4.
