Northborough – The Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks girls’ basketball kicked off their season with a 47-34 win over the North Middlesex Regional High School Patriots in a game played Dec. 12.
The Patriots started strong and had a 17-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Tomahawks defense kept the Patriots scoreless in the second quarter, allowing them to tie the game 17-17 by halftime. The Tomahawks offense took control in the second half, propelling them to a 47-34 win.
Seniors Kendyl Finelli and Emily Carens each scored 14 points for the Tomahawks. Sophomore Grace Young and junior Brittani Leblanc were the top scorers for the Patriots, with 13 points each.
This was the first game for the Algonquin girls under new coach Melissa Fustino. Ron Jones, who had coached the team for the past 21 years, was in attendance and watched happily from the bleachers.
