Marlborough – The “Boroughs Trail” conceptual plan to create a regional trail linking existing and over 30 miles of proposed trail systems in Marlborough, Northborough, Westborough and Southborough was accepted by the City Council at the May 4 meeting.
Conservation Officer Priscilla Ryder reviewed the plans with members of the Open Space Committee and encouraged its acceptance.
“It is a wonderful opportunity for the communities involved with this project,” she said.
In 2012, the Marlborough Community Development Corporation (MEDC) acquired a District Local Technical Assistance grant from the regional planning agencies to determine the feasibility of creating the Boroughs Trail.
Ryder said the study was formed “to create a regional trail that encourages the exploration, enjoyment and protection of the boroughs’ natural resources.”
Members of the regional group working on the project are working with legislators and state agencies to acquire grant funding.
Councilors also approved the 26-mile “Panther Trail,” connecting Marlborough’s parks, public grounds and open space in one loop extending throughout the city. Included are the Assabet River Rail Trail, Ghiloni Park, Callahan State Park, Sudbury Reservoir Watershed land, Lake Williams, Felton Conservation land and Millham Reservoir. Volunteers and local Scout troops will assist with building sections to be included in the plan.
