Shrewsbury – Nancy M. (Hamm) Walent, 61, of Shrewsbury, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016, surrounded by her loving family, in UMass University Campus in Worcester after an illness.

Nancy was born and raised in Worcester, daughter of the late Arnold and Wanda E. (Tanona) Hamm. She graduated in 1972 from Burncoat High School, attended Worcester State College, and graduated from Fitchburg State College with a degree in Special Education.

Nancy spent time in the Shrewsbury public school system and later worked as a Special Education teacher at City View School in Worcester. She spent her summers on the beach, and could always be found with a book in her hand. Spending time with her family brought Nancy the greatest joy.

She is survived by her loving husband of 23 years, Philip J. Walent; her only son, John P. Walent of Shrewsbury; two brothers, Arnold Hamm and his wife Gail of Worcester and Joseph Hamm and his wife Christine of Leicester; a sister, Martha E. Serafin of Shrewsbury; nieces and nephews, Shelley, Liz, Leah, Jack, and Jay; and many extended family members of the Hamm, Walent, and Tanona families.

Calling hours for Nancy will be held Sunday, Jan. 17, from 3-6 p.m., in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury. Her funeral will be held Monday, Jan. 18, with a funeral Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. in Saint Mary’s Church, 640 Main St., Shrewsbury. Burial will be private in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
