Northborough – On a drizzly Oct. 29, nine teams of two players competed in the first Cornhole Tournament to benefit a new Boros Cares 4 Troops (BC4T) scholarship fund at the Vincent F. Picard American Legion Post 234 in Northborough. The winners Pinh Pen and Jerry Riel received $100. Second-place players Karen Thornton and Jeff Millar got $50. Each team donated their winnings back to BC4T.
More funds were raised with refreshments and a 50/50 raffle. The Cornhole Tournament is expected to become an annual event to be held in the spring.
BC4T was founded in 2015 by Northborough residents Leslie Arsenault, Karen Brewster, Beth Davison and Michelle Gillespie with the mission of sending care packages to deployed service members. More recently, BC4T expanded its mission to reach out to help military veterans at home.
Proceeds from this fundraiser will establish a BC4T scholarship for an Algonquin Regional High School graduate. Students applying will need to get to know a veteran for at least 90 days, help them in some way such as chores, and learn about their military service. Applicants will write an essay about their experience with the veteran, which will be submitted anonymously by a guidance counselor to BC4T.
BC4T is planning to send packages soon to Afghanistan. For more information about BC4T, including lists of needed items to donate and drop-off locations, visit bc4t.org and on Facebook at facebook.com/wearebc4t. Monetary donations toward shipping charges and purchasing items such as phone cards can be made online, or postal mailed by check payable to “Boros Cares 4 Troops,” P.O. Box 304, Northborough, MA 01532.
