Marlborough – One of the most beloved holiday traditions for many families is a visit with Santa. But for a child with special needs, the experience, with the crowds, loud music and bright holiday decorations, not to mention Santa himself, it can be incredibly overwhelming.

But thanks to the Caring Santa program at the Solomon Pond Mall, many local families were able to enjoy the experience on a recent Sunday morning in a low-key but still fun and festive way.

For the event, families were asked to sign up for a time to visit with Santa, so that their child would not need to stand in line for long. Sensory triggers such as music and lights were turned down. As children were escorted by their parents to meet Santa, they were able to do so on their terms. No child was pressured to do so or rushed by either the staff or Santa. Once they got close enough, some sat next to him while others just stood nearby. No matter what, they were greeted with a kind smile and soft words.

“All of our Santas are kind and gentle to begin with so they really are able to relate well to these children,” said Sheila Hennessy, the mall’s area director of marketing.

“Of course the children love it but this is also just as much for the families,” she added. ”It gives them a chance to share this wonderful holiday tradition and make some special memories.”

As one mother watched her children cautiously move towards Santa, eventually getting close enough to talk to him, she echoed Hennessey’s thoughts.

“We’ve been coming here for at least four or five years now,” one mother said. “For my kids, sounds and smells can be stressful.”

“So it’s nice to bring them here when there is not as much noise or craziness,” she added. “It’s really special and we are so grateful for it.”
