Shrewsbury – Approximately 80 seniors from Shrewsbury and neighboring communities went to the First Annual Shrewsbury Senior Prom, which was held Sept. 13 at the town’s Senior Center, 98 Maple Ave. Some were dressed to the nines, while others were more casual. Some guests came with dates while others enjoyed just attending with friends. But unlike a typical high school prom, this was truly a no-pressure, drama-free event and rather, just a nice way for folks to get together and enjoy a great night out.

“We are really looking forward to having our first Senior Prom this evening. This is something that has been very popular in other communities and it is fun to get dressed up,” Sharon Yager, the Director of Shrewsbury Council on Aging, said at the beginning of the event.

The prom was sponsored by the Spirit of Shrewsbury Fall Festival Committee and the Senior Center. Guests dined on a sumptuous buffet catered by the Lakeside Bar and Grille and enjoyed “mocktail” punch, coffee and cake.

The room was beautifully decorated and guests were treated to entertainment provided by Joe Cariglia. Music ranged from the old standards of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett to a few contemporary selections.

The evening was capped by a “dance off” of several couples vying for the titles of Prom King and Queen. The honors went to Barbara Cotoia and David Firmin who were surprised and thrilled.
