WESTBOROUGH – A bus driver was arrested this morning while on their morning route.

According to a message from Superintendent Amber Bock to the school community, the Bus 8 driver was arrested while at Park Village, 135 E. Main Street. Bock said that Mill Pond students were on the bus while the driver was arrested by Westborough police.

Bock said that everyone is safe.

“Providing for our students’ safety is the most important responsibility that we have and we are shocked and dismayed about this,” Bock said.

At 11:00 a.m., a statement from Westborough Police Chief Todd Minardi detailed that, following reports from individuals concerned about the bus driver’s behavior, the Westborough Police Department made an arrest. Jane Welch, 51, of Marlborough, was arrested on charges of OUI (liquor) as a second offense, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and child endangerment while OUI.

Welch is expected to be arraigned today in Westborough District Court.

“We want to reassure the community that swift and decisive action was taken to address the situation and prevent any further potential harm,” Minardi’s statement reads. “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who reported their concerns and collaborated with us throughout this process. Your vigilance and willingness to speak up contribute significantly to the safety of our community’s children.”

In an updated statement, Bock said the district has told their bus company, NRT, that they are “outraged that this happened and we have demanded a full investigation into their procedures.”

An NRT spokesperson said, “The safety of our students is critical, and we are deeply disturbed by these allegations. The driver has been terminated and we will continue to fully cooperate with local authorities while this matter is investigated.”

She said that during her time in Westborough, the district has been fortunate to have “exceptional” drivers that have provided outstanding services to families.

“While this incident is distressing, we maintain faith in our dedicated team of drivers, and we urge your continued support and understanding during this challenging time,” Bock said.
