Westborough – The Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks boys’ ice hockey team defeated the Westborough High School Rangers 5-1 in the opening round of the Boroughs Cup, Dec. 13 at Northstar Ice Sports.
Nolan Kimball scored two goals and assisted on two others, while Noah Larsen, Tommy Ackil and Henry Alford each scored once for Algonquin. Algonquin goalie Matt Bogdanski nearly got the shutout in net, as Westborough’s lone goal was scored by Sean Meehan with just 0.9 seconds left in the game.
Algonquin will face Wachusett in the Boroughs Cup finals Saturday at 8 p.m., while Westborough will face Marlborough in the consolation game at 6pm.
The first game of the season between Algonquin and Westborough is also recognized as the Matt Bruce Cup, which serves as a fundraiser for ALS. Matt Bruce was an avid hockey player and Algonquin graduate who died in 2014 at the age of 26 from ALS. In addition to the winning team taking home a trophy, the coaches of the losing team take the ice bucket challenge after the game.
