Westborough – When Amy Haskell and the other members of the Westborough High School (WHS) Student Council had finished raking leaves for members of the community one day last fall, they were famished.
“But everyone wanted something different to eat,” she recalled. “Suddenly we knew there was one place that would satisfy everyone – the South Street Diner.”
During that meal, Amy said the teens were delighted about the opportunity to introduce a new-to-town WHS student, Delia, to the South Street experience. Delia, Amy was happy to report, was just as thrilled with her meal that day as the other students.
Amy's recounting of that experience recently won her a $500 scholarship in an essay contest sponsored by the South Street Diner.
The diner's proprietors, Phyllis Keene and Mark Sullivan, noted that each year they award a scholarship as a way to give back to the community.
“We really feel it is so important to do so,” Keene said. “When our son [Tyler Sullivan] graduated, he got scholarships. We always tried to instill in him the importance of community and being involved. This is our way of doing that.”
“It is my pleasure to give [Amy] this scholarship,” Sullivan added. “I wish her all the best of luck.”
Amy plans to attend Boston College this fall, where she will major in English and secondary education; she hopes to become a high school teacher after graduating. She is the daughter of Lisa and David Haskell, of Westborough.
“I's so grateful to [Keene and Sullivan]. This will really help me,” Amy said, “and I love the South Street Diner!”
