Northborough – Town and school officials have decided to cancel several outdoor evening events that were scheduled for this weekend's Applefest. The decision was made due to the presence of mosquitoes in neighboring towns that have been found to be carrying either Eastern Equine Encephalitis or the West Nile Virus.
According to a press release from the officials, “Activities that will be cancelled include the outdoor BBQ and fireworks display. All other daytime and indoor events will continue as scheduled.”
“All organized evening outdoor athletic events will be rescheduled and/or postponed. School officials are currently working on these details and will release information as soon as it is available,” the release stated.
No word has been released yet on the status of the football game that is scheduled to be played between Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) and Wachusett Regional High School Friday evening, Sept. 15.
On Friday, Sept. 7, the State Department of Public Health (DPH) elevated the mosquito-borne illness risk level in Northborough to “High” after neighboring Westborough was raised to the “Critical” level. Auburn, Hopkinton, Grafton, Shrewsbury, Southborough, Upton and Worcester were elevated to “High” as well, due to their close proximity to Westborough.
More details will be forthcoming.
