On this day in 1970 one of the true female legends of rock and roll, Janis Joplin, died of a heroin overdose. She was only 27.
On this day in 1957, the names “Ward, June, Wally” and most of all, “Beaver,” became part of television history as the popular family-themed show, “Leave it to Beaver” first premiered.
And on this day in 1965 Pope Paul VI became the first Pope to ever visit the United States and western hemisphere.
Happy birthday to – actor Liev Schreiber (1967); novelist Anne Rice (1941); and actress Susan Sarandon (1946).

1. Sen. Scott Brown made another local campaign stop, this time on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at the Willows in Westborough.

2. The public is invited to the Unitarian Church of Marlborough and Hudson to enjoy inspirational family films on the church's big screen. “The Lorax” will be shown Friday, Oct. 5, and “We Bought a Zoo” is slated for Friday, Nov. 2. Attendance is free.

5. Shrewsbury residents are advised to remove all decorations from town ?cemeteries by Oct. 10 so that crews may do their fall clean-up.
6. Recreation departments for most towns have their own websites. Shrewsbury residents may go to the one for their town to sign their kids up for the winter basketball season.
