SHREWSBURY – More than 1,200 seniors enjoyed barbecue lunches, giveaways and more at a record-setting iteration of Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis’ free annual senior picnic earlier this month.

Held at SAC Park in Shrewsbury on June 4, the event ran in a drive-thru format with boxed lunches available for guests.

There were also car washes, raffle prizes, complimentary gift bags, music and other entertainment.

This year’s picnic saw record turnout, with so many registrations that organizers had to cap the sign-up process, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s office.

“Our annual senior picnic is always one of my favorite events as sheriff,” Evangelidis said. “People have such a wonderful time, and I am so appreciative of the efforts from all our volunteers, vendors, and all the seniors who came out this year to make it an exceptional day.”

A familiar tradition in Shrewsbury, the picnic previously shifted to a drive-thru modality due to COVID-19. It continued functioning in that format this year.

This year’s picnic was sponsored by the Worcester County Reserve Deputy Sheriff’s Association and featured donations by local businesses.

More than 100 volunteers helped manage the event.
