Lynn – The Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks fell to the Needham High School Rockets by a score of 3-1 in the 2015 MIAA Girls Soccer Division 1 State Finals. The state championship game was played Nov. 21 at Manning Field in Lynn.
Needham struck first with a goal by Rachel Kingston 15 minutes into the first half, although Algonquin continued to play tough and went into halftime trailing by a score of 1-0. However, Needham scored two additional goals in the initial eight minutes of the second half, the first by Kathleen Rizzo and the second by Kingston. A goal by Algonquin’s Caroline Leonard with 14:36 remaining in the game provided some inspiration for the Tomahawks, but the deficit was too much for them to overcome in the remaining time.
“The team pushed right to the end, I couldn’t be prouder of them” commented Algonquin coach Scott Taggart at the conclusion of the game.
“The seven seniors were great leaders throughout the season and I’m very sorry to see them go,” Taggert continued, referring to Caroline Leonard, Kendall Sweeney, Lauren Cammarano, Kaitlyn Shreeve, Annemarie Moy, Katelyn Thebado and Caroline MacClancy.
Needham completes their season with the Division 1 State title and a 21-0-2 record. The Algonquin girls had a great run and completed their season with a 21-2 record.
