A look back at the Red Barn Theatre on the Turnpike

Westborough – For 20 years, starting with its opening day, July 2, 1938, the Red Barn Theatre, located at the intersection of Routes 9 and 30, offered a different play every week for a 26-week season. The Barn entertained summer stock followers, hired resident extras and service people. The actors and actresses stayed at Crossways, Waite's Twilight Cabins or Dumont's Cabins and ate at local restaurants. The theater was advertised in the New York Times theater section with 89 other summer theaters along the East Coast known as the Straw Hat Circuit. A new cast of stars traveled to each venue on a weekly basis throughout the summer season.

Selectmen again postpone hearing regarding “unruly” dogs

Shrewsbury - A hearing on how to deal with complaints of unruly dogs in the Westmont Road neighborhood was again postponed during the June 11 meeting of the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen. Shrewsbury Animal Control Officer Leona M. Pease had brought before the selectmen the case of complaints from neighbors of Rolland Demers, of 31 Westmont Rd., about unleashed dogs "Saydee" and "Pesky" roaming the neighborhood and allegedly causing problems for other property owners. This hearing was to dispose of the case through action of the selectmen.

Sheriff's Community Work Program lauded as success in Marlborough

Marlborough – Like many municipalities, Marlborough finds itself struggling to find funding at times to pay for needed city services. This past summer, when work needed to be done to clean up two of the city's parks, Mayor Arthur Vigeant turned to an unusual source to find manpower- the office of Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian. Over the past year, the Community Work Program (CWP) run by Koutoujian's office has sent crews composed of non-violent inmates near the end of their jail terms to areas throughout Metro West to work on municipal projects. Crews in Marlborough spent several days clearing weeds, vines and other debris from Ward Park and Stevens Park. According to Vigeant, this measure saved the city $5,000.

Fighting stigma in wake of tragedy

Marlborough – Michael "Mikey" Emerson Maloney is remembered by his friends and family as someone who loved to cook, talk politics, care for animals, play the guitar and listen to the Beatles, Pink Floyd and other music of that era. Tragically, he passed away on March 20 at the age of 24 after a prolonged battle with depression and social anxiety disorder. On March 29, over 200 people packed into Speakers Night Club in Marlborough to reminisce about a young man who many considered a "tremendous kid."

Marlborough City Council approves tax break for Hologic

Marlborough - In an effort to mitigate some of the costs of moving Hologic’s global corporate headquarters to Marlborough, the City Council unanimously approved a five-year extension of its tax increment financing (TIF) at the May 18 meeting. By moving from Bedford to Marlborough, Hologic will add 150 employees to its workforce already in the city – at 250 Campus Drive and 445 Simarano Drive, bringing the total to over 600 positions.

Westborough Rotary’s Free Holiday Shop helps more than 90 families

Westborough - For well over a decade, the Westborough Rotary Club and Westborough Youth and Family Services have partnered to hold their annual Free Holiday Store where parents and guardians can select presents for their children who might otherwise receive none. “This year, there were 91 families that came through with 186 children benefiting this year. Just knowing that we are truly able to make a difference in so many people’s lives is quite rewarding,” said Julia O’Neil-Welch, WYFS administrative assistant.
