Local meal tax proposed to fund Marlborough sports, tourism

Marlborough - City Council President Trish Pope and Ward 1 City Councilor Joseph Delano are asking other councilors to join them in adopting a local tax on the sale of restaurant meals originating in the city. They presented a proposal at the council's Nov. 4 meeting to establish a .75 percent meals tax and to use these funds to create a special revenue account – the Parks and Fields Development Special Revenue Fund.

Voters elect Page, Irish to Council

Marlborough - Voters in Wards 2 and 5 elected Robert Page and John Irish, respectively, to City Council seats in the Nov. 5 Biennial Municipal Election. Page defeated former Ward 2 City Councilor Paul Ferro by 111 votes. Page held the post from 2001 to 2003 when Ferro defeated him and represented Ward 2 until 2012 when he was outvoted by Rich Jenkins who did not run this year as he has moved out of the ward. John Irish of West Hill Road, a political newcomer, won the Ward 5 over another newcomer, Carlos Valadares of Witherbee Street. Ward 5 has been represented by Robert Seymour who did not seek re-election.

New Senior Center approved by council

Marlborough - A new senior center for the city of Marlborough will finally become a reality as the City Council approved at its Nov. 4 meeting a $6.5 million bond to construct the building at Ward Park. Simultaneously they also approved Mayor Arthur Vigeant's request for a bond for $3 million to construct outdoor recreational facilities to enhance Ward Park. Both orders passed with 10 councilors in favor and one opposed. Ward 4 City Councilor Rob Tunnera made his decision to vote against the new center after contacting other local senior centers. He said he did not think the building proposed would be large enough to serve the city's growing senior population. He also said that he had received more negative than positive responses from constituents.

MEDC hosts conference on manufacturing

Marlborough – Over 100 business leaders and local and state officials gathered at The Campus at Marlborough Oct. 25 for the 2013 Marlborough Innovation Summit. The focus of the event, titled "Resources for Keeping Your Gears in Motion," was to discuss the issue of manufacturing and how the state can better position itself to attract more funding and qualified employees to this sector. The summit was the fourth annual event organized by the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and co-sponsored by law firm Mirick O"Connell.

New plan for Dunkin” Donuts drive-thru before council

Marlborough - Should there be a Dunkin" Donuts downtown? This question was asked several times during a public hearing held by the City Council Oct. 21 as they addressed revised plans for a drive-thru at the 54 Main St. restaurant, at the corner of Cotting Avenue. Although there was no opposition expressed by residents or business owners during the hearing, several councilors posed questions on traffic, parking and noise generated by delivery trucks to the property during early morning hours.

Trick or Trot Halloween Fun Run for the Special Olympics

Marlborough – The annual Trick or Trot Halloween Fun Run to benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Massachusetts was held Oct. 19 at the Yawkey Sports Training Center. Events included a Kid's Dash, a 5K run, and a walking course, and participants were encouraged to dress in costume. According to Section Director Jon Scully, nearly 200 people participated in this year's event, along with 50 volunteers. Approximately $19,000 was raised. Karen Gregorczyk of Paxton was the overall winner of the 5K race, and Paul Peraino was the first male finisher.

Marlborough - Voters in Wards 2 and 5 will be electing new councilors when they go to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 5. For the third time in the past 10 years, Paul Ferro and Robert Page are seeking the Ward 2 Council seat. Page served for two years and lost to Ferro in 2003. Ferro held the seat until 2012 when he was outvoted by Rich Jenkins who is not running this year as he has moved out of the ward.

Marlborough – The Marlborough High School (MHS) class of 2014 followed the lead of last year's seniors and announced their superlatives in the fall instead of the spring, so that photos could get published in the yearbook. That schedule is expected to continue, according to class advisor Paula Ryder. "The kids have known each other for a long time, so they already know who they'se going to vote for in the fall," she said.

Local triathlete competes for friends battling cancer

Marlborough - Marlborough resident, businessman, author and Team USA triathlon athlete Mike McCombs is a two-time national champion in NCAA Division II swimming, an All American for his age group for the last two years, a national aquabike champion in 2012, and a qualifier for the 2013 and 2014 World Triathlon Championship. But his proudest achievement is biking, running and swimming in the name of his two friends battling cancer, Jim DeWitt and Tim Mathis. McCombs has competed in several major triathlons and always wears the name of DeWitt and Mathis on his helmet and bike.
