Young jazz musicians eagerly go to summer school

Marlborough – A dedication to jazz music didn's stop during summer break for 49 students entering grades six through 10. They attended the city's first Jazz Camp, conducted three hours daily from Aug. 5 to 9 at Marlborough High School (MHS). The camp was organized locally by Simon Harding, an instrumental music teacher at Whitcomb Middle School, who has been involved with a similar program in Mendon.

That's where the United Way of Tri-County's 2013 Toolz for School Backpack Program helps out. According to local United Way officials, last year the organization, thanks to the support of 19 companies and 21 agencies, gave out over 800 backpacks filled with age-appropriate school supplies to children in need.

4th annual SJL motorcycle ride draws almost 300 bikers

Marlborough??"Almost 300 bikers revved their motorcycles and then rode out of the Marlboro Moose Family Center 1129 parking lot Aug. 10 for the 2013 SJL Memorial Scholarship Fund Motorcycle Ride. The fundraiser is an annual event to honor the life of Shawna Jean Larassa, who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2009 at age 19. The ride has been hosted annually by her father, George Larassa, as a way to raise money so that students, both adults and children, can afford an education.

George Whapham named as Marlborough's “Veteran of the Year”

Marlborough – Commended by local dignitaries as one who "embodies the true values of America," George Whapham was named "Veteran of the Year" at a special ceremony held by the Marlborough Veterans Council August 3 at the Fish and Game Club. Whapham served in the Korean War and spent 60 years with the American Legion Akroyd Houde Post 132 supporting local and area veterans and their activities. In nominating Whapman for the award, John Raymond, commander of Post 132, said: "His affiliations and activities demonstrate his deep commitment to country, community, family, education, youth, spirituality and music."

Marlborough Downtown Village introduces outdoor art festival

Marlborough – Less than a year after the Massachusetts Cultural Council approved the designation of the Marlborough Downtown Village Cultural District, the area will host a Village Art Festival with activities taking place from Union Common to Monument Square and several spots in between. Presented by Marlborough Downtown Village (MDV), the first-time event will be held Sunday, Sept. 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Artists of any medium are invited to exercise their creativity outdoors at the downtown pocket parks and other landmarks. The public is welcomed to observe the creation of artwork in progress. Serving as event producer is Marlborough artist and historian Susan Alatalo.

Thousands expected at Labor Day weekend's Grecian Festival

Marlborough – Revelers will celebrate cultural traditions Labor Day weekend as Sts. Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church hosts the eighth annual Grecian Festival, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1, noon to 10 p.m., and Monday, Sept. 2, noon to 6 p.m. Activities will take place outdoors on the church grounds as well as inside the community center known as Hellenic Hall, which opened in 2011 following a fire in 2001. Proceeds from past years" festivals helped its building fund.
