Fun runs for local runners

Region - Mark your summer and fall calendar for five unique road races, each with its own special challenge and benefiting local charities. The 5K Spirit of Hudson Road Race with free Mighty Mite Marathon for kids 2 – 6 will be held Saturday, June 11, at 8:30 a.m. The race will start at 5 Houghton St. (around the corner from Medusa Brewing Co.) in Hudson. The race is part of the Hudson Community Festival; 100 percent of the proceeds go to the Elks scholarship fund. USA Track & Field (USATF) certified/walkers welcome/medal awards.

Marlborough City Council approves funds for Assabet renovations

Marlborough - At its May 21 meeting, the City Council approved funding of nearly $23.5 million for repairs to the Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School (AVRTHS). The funds will be appropriated over a 30-year period. Marlborough joins the six other AVRTHS member communities - Westborough, Southborough, Northborough, Berlin, Hudson and Maynard - in supporting the proposed $62.4 million repair project, which includes the replacement of the roof, windows and doors, and the heating and ventilation systems. Superintendent Mary Jo Nawrocki said she was very pleased with the unanimous vote of the City Council and looked forward to a meeting in early June with the Assabet School Building Committee to discuss the next steps.

Kids make a splash in Marlborough

Marlborough - It was an afternoon of fun in the sun at Wayside Racquet and Swim Club Aug. 3. Kidfest, an end of the summer celebration, offered a variety of activities for kids and their families: jump houses, pitch "n" splash, an inflatable obstacle course, puppet shows, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton candy, face painting, spin art, tattoos, reptiles from Curious Creatures and more.

Marlborough - The City Council approved a measure at its July 9 meeting to join a coalition of cities and towns in central Massachusetts that will strive to develop effective strategies regarding issues such as cuts to local aid and unfunded state mandates. In a communication inviting Marlborough officials to join the coalition, former City Councilor James Kane, who is now a member of the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen, noted, "The time has come to seek substantive changes." Forum on new Senior Center draws crowd

Marlborough – Over 200 city residents gathered for a public forum at the city's current senior center June 26 to discuss a proposed new center that would be built at Ward Park. The proposal to build a new center at that location has been met with approval by many of the city's residents who feel the current location at 240 Main St. does not adequately service the needs of the city's senior citizens. But the plan has also been vehemently opposed by a number of citizens, especially members of the Ward Park Neighborhood Association.

Once she has packed her car, she drops off donations to Roland's House - Marlborough-Hudson Homeless Shelter; the Marlborough Community Cupboard - Food Pantry; three senior living communities; and the Senior Center. McDonald's renovation plans move forward in Marlborough

Marlborough – A proposal to upgrade the McDonald's restaurant at 155 Boston Post Road West moved forward at the April 8 City Council meeting as Project Manager John A. Kucich of Bohler Engineering outlined plans during a public hearing. If approved, the special permit will include upgrading the drive through with side-by-side order stations, which Kucich said will greatly improve the efficiency by allowing two customers to place orders simultaneously. By effectively cutting the order time in half, traffic will move smoothly, reducing the on-site stacking, he said.
