Westborough triathlon continues successful run

Westborough - Early Aug. 18, on the grounds of the Westborough State Hospital, bicycles were being removed from bike racks, athletes were donning wetsuits, and running shoes were at the ready. The excitement was palpable as the participants made their way across the newly mowed fields for the fourth annual Westborough Sprint Triathlon. By 7:10 a.m., registration was in full swing, the triathlon transition area filled with athletes and supporters. This year's event saw its biggest turnout to date with more than 450 athletes participating. Athletes who had travelled from numerous states listened attentively as race director Mark Walter, owner of Sun Multisport Events, spoke to the crowd with race day instructions and heartfelt words: "Be kind to one another out there and keep it safe."

Corridor Nine to host 20th Applefest 5K

Region - The Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce Applefest 5K Race is one of those "must do" fall races in New England, especially this year as the chamber's commemorates its 20th year as the hosting organization. Registrations are now being accepted for this year's race which will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. at the Marion E. Zeh School, 33 Howard St., Northborough.

Rangers give back to Westborough

Westborough - Westborough High School (WHS) student-athletes showed their appreciation for their hometown by volunteering at various Westborough locations Aug. 20. as part of the first Rangers Community Service Day. Mia Natale and Addie Egan, both rising seniors and student-athletes, were the visionaries behind the day. Natale first came up with the idea of student-athletes trading a day of practice for a day of service after she and Egan attended a Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) conference last summer. Natale then presented the idea to the MIAA where she also serves on the Student Advisory Committee. The girls then started forming a plan last summer of a Rangers Community Service Day.

St. John's makes upgrades to sports complex

Shrewsbury – Commuters traveling along busy Main Street to or from Route 290 most likely have wondered about the construction project that is going on this summer at Pioneer Field, the St. John's High School sports complex. As the school's Headmaster Michael Welch explained, the project is a massive renovation that is long overdue. Over the last decade, the school has invested $12 million in academic improvements. But the last time any money was invested into Pioneer Field, the home to the school's baseball, soccer, lacrosse and football teams, was 1982. "Our philosophy has always been to make appropriate capital investments at the proper times in our history," he said. "We also try to maintain [investments] long beyond the [natural] life cycle."

Marlborough celebrates baseball attracts spectators for week of baseball tournaments

Marlborough – In spite of the stifling heat wave, hundreds of young baseball players and thousands of fans congregated in Marlborough the week of July 19-25 to play in either the Cal Ripken 11-and-under State Tournament or the 12-and-under Regional Tournament. The tournaments, played at the Williams Street Fields, were sponsored by the Marlborough Youth Baseball Association (MYBA). According to MYBA General Manager Peter Scerra, 16 teams from six states participated in the tournaments. Scerra noted the Regional Tournament is considered "prestigious," as the winner eventually goes on to the World Series. The Marlborough team won the 11 U State tournament championship over Littleton, 10-9 and will next play in the Regional Tournament to be held in Warwick, R.I. In the 12 U Regional tournament, Quincy defeated Ararat Maine to advance to the World Series which will be held in Indiana.

Annual Westborough triathlon seeks volunteers

Westborough - The Rotary Club of Westborough is hosting its fourth annual Sprint Triathlon Sunday, Aug. 18, beginning at 8 a.m. at the former Westborough State Hospital property on Lyman Street. The event will be rain or shine. Organizers expect more than 400 athletes at the triathlon this year and are seeking volunteers to monitor athletes along the route and at water stations. Volunteers are needed from 7 to 10:30 a.m. on the morning of the race.
