Hudson - Hoping to experience Portuguese culture on a global scale, 14 Hudson High School (HHS) students will travel to the little known African island nation of São Tomé e Príncipe later this year. They will spend 11 days abroad in a study of culture and language that will touch on a number of aspects of life in the country.

Hudson - Each week, close to two dozen students at Quinn Middle School in Hudson flock to the afterschool Scratch Club where school librarian Rolf Wasserman helps them learn the basics of computer programming. Wasserman discovered Scratch and started the club in the fall of 2014. Developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab, Scratch is a programming language designed for children. It features blocks or commands that a user can snap together to create games, animations, music and more. For Wasserman, the simplicity of the program as well as the opportunity for innovation makes it ideal for his students.

Westborough High senior leaves his mark on chess through teaching

Westborough - A YouTube video posted in 2014 shows Westborough High School senior Andrew Liu hiding his high value pieces behind a wall of low value ones for most of a chess match. Then, in a flurry of moves, he swings all his pieces out from behind his defense and seizes control of the match. Liu’s opponent, then 15-year-old Christopher Gu, saw his own defense collapse and soon conceded defeat, a loser at the hands of a unique and unorthodox playing style that Liu, used to secure six national chess championships in six years.

Hudson honors its history and future at sesquicentennial parade

Hudson - Months after fireworks kicked off year-long celebrations of Hudson’s 150th anniversary, the town hosted its main event, bringing nearly 1,000 marchers through the heart of town for a parade honoring Hudson’s history and future. Organized over a 12-month period starting last fall, the parade featured 14 floats spread out over seven sections. In addition to the floats, the parade drew local politicians including state Representative Kate Hogan (D-Stow), Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, and Marlborough Mayor Arthur Vigeant.

Balloons and Blues Festival flourishes under new format

Hudson - Long after their show at this year’s Hudson Balloons and Blues festival ended, bassist Howie Swett and sound designer John May of the Mychael David Project watched the festival’s headliner, Bruce Marshall wrap up his performance. While Marshall performed, hot air balloons rose and eventually fell in the field before him. In those moments, festival attendees were able to see the combination that organizers have been trying to polish for the past two years -- hot air balloons and live music.
