Firefighting funds dry up in Marlborough

Firefighting funds dry up in MarlboroughMarlborough – In municipalities, a fiscal year is not the same as a calendar year; rather it runs from June 30 to June 30. So when the Marlborough Fire Department found itself short by $5,000 for the last week of fiscal year (FY) 2011, due to overtime and pending vacations, the City Council was asked at its June 20 meeting to transfer monies into the Fire Department to cover the deficit. When that request was denied, Mayor Nancy Stevens felt she had no choice but to close Fire Station 3 until June 24, the start of the first pay period for FY 2012. Although the decision was unpopular, fortunately there was no impact on public safety.
