Northborough – Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) senior Zach Meath credits football for changing his life.
“I gained so many things playing football that I could not have gained from any other activity,” said the Northborough resident and Tomahawks captain.
“I worked harder at improving in football than I have for anything in my life,” he added.
“Football gave me a work ethic that I can carry with me throughout the rest of my life. It also proved to me that you really can do anything you set your mind to.”
While Meath's size kept him from making weight for Pop Warner football, it was an asset when he took to the field as both a center and defensive tackle for ARHS. His hard work and determination paid off when he won an Outstanding Player at Hog Works Summer Lineman Camp in Worcester. Then, as a senior, Meath was named captain, a first-team League All-Star and a first-team Division 1 All-Star. Most recently, he was awarded the team's Outstanding Lineman Award at the year-end football banquet.
Meath said he will carry the lessons he has learned on the field into all areas of his life.
“Football gave me a new found confidence that I never had before. It has shown me how important it is to work as a team and has provided me with friendships [with the players and coaches] that I will never forget.”
