Mary L. Shumak, 88Shrewsbury – Mary L. “Maria” (Ventresca) Shumak, 88, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, with her family around her, in the UMass/Memorial Hospital. Her husband, John J. Shumak, died in 1981.

She is survived by her two devoted daughters, Gina Shumak of Shrewsbury, with whom she lived, and Joanne Scirpoli and her husband Frank of Shrewsbury, and several close cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Naldo Ventresca.

Born in Provencia, Torre Di Nolfi, Abbruzzo, Sulmona, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Felice and Anna (Ventresca) Ventresca. She came to the United States in 1940 and became a U.S. Citizen in 1946.

Mrs. Shumak worked for the G.E. Telechron Company for many years before she retired. She was a life communicant of Our Lady of Mt Carmel-St Ann Church. She enjoyed her trips to Atlantic City with her friends and loved to shop. She was a strong and independent woman, and enjoyed being with her family. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of 6 South at the Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion that was shown to Maria and her family.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 19 from the Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St, Worcester, with a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St Ann Church, 24 Mulberry St. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Jan. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum.
