Northborough– On April 13, the seventh-grade students at Robert E. Melican Middle School participated in an all-day Greek festival. In conjunction with their Social Studies-Greek units and English Language Arts, students became Greek Olympians for the day, each representing an ancient city-state, including: Sparta, Thebes, Delos, Agenia, Argos, Delphi, Mantinea, Chalcis and Megra.
Social Studies teacher Sharon Goyette explained the process.
“My students represent the ancient city of Argos, she said. “They will compete in a variety of events throughout the day, including theater, obstacle courses, food tasting and Greek architecture.”
Students competed against other “city states” and were graded on active participation, staying in character, historical accuracy and effective group dynamics. Students enjoyed stepping into the past and realizing their inner “Aeginetian.”
