Shrewsbury – Raymond J. Hmura, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at his home in Shrewsbury, surrounded by his family. He was 90.
On Jan. 9, 1924, Raymond was born in Worcester to the late Joseph F. and Katherine M. (Pajak) Hmura. A lifelong resident of Shrewsbury, he graduated from Maj. Howard Beal High School, class of 1942, and attended Worcester Jr. College, where he studied to become an electrician. Raymond proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He met the love of his life, Mabel R. (Lacroix) Hmura, with whom he celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary last May.
He worked as an electrician taking over his father's business, Shrewsbury Electric Services, until his retirement at age 62. When he wasn’t working, he could be found working in his yard with Mabel tending to their rose gardens.
Raymond and Mabel also spent 20 years in Naples, Florida. He was a parishioner at Saint Anne's Church, where he served as a longtime usher and collector at the 4 p.m. Mass each Saturday. He was a member of the Ray Stone American Legion Post #238 and the Knights of Columbus Adelphi Council #4181.
In heaven, Raymond joins his parents, Joseph and Katherine, and sister-in-laws, Jeanette Scheurer, Claire Brunelle, Florence Desaulniers, and Gertrude Richard. He is survived by his wife, Mabel; his niece with whom he lived and who so caringly looked after him, Julie Richard and her son Nikolai of Shrewsbury; and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Raymond's life by gathering for a calling hour Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m., at Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center, before leaving in procession to Saint Anne's Church, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury, where his funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will be private in Mountain View Cemetery.
