Grafton – The Grafton Fire Department Rehab Support Unit (better known as the Canteen Truck) is 37 years old this year and needs to be replaced soon. As there are no funds in the town’s budget to replace this truck, organizers are requesting donations from the public.
The truck supports the town’s firefighters while they are on duty fighting fires and saving lives in Grafton. It also provides mutual aid calls in 26 surrounding towns and it will go to places such as the Boston Marathon when requested.
The current 1981 Chevrolet Step van (14 foot) was donated in 2003 and outfitted for use as a canteen truck by the members of Station #3, Grafton Fire Department. All the supplies used and new equipment bought on the truck are paid for 100 percent by donations. The secretary of the fire department, the wives of some of the firefighters and others like off duty firefighters volunteer their time to drive, staff and stock it. One of many wishes for a new or newer truck is the need for additional space (a longer vehicle – at least 16 feet) where firefighters can be better rehabilitated at a scene.
The fundraiser will continue until Monday, April 30.
Checks can be made payable to Grafton Firefighters Association Rehab and then dropped off or mailed to: Headquarters, Grafton Fire Department, 26 Upton St., Grafton MA 01519.
