High school scoreboard: Teams push toward postseason as regular season winds down

REGION – More winter weather disrupted another batch of local high school sports games last week.

Teams continued to move through their schedules, though, as they now approach the end of the regular season.

Many area programs are now eyeing postseason futures as they gear up for their respective playoff brackets.

ALGONQUIN

BOYS’ HOCKEY – JAN. 31

Algonquin – 1, Westborough – 2,

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL – JAN. 31

Algonquin – 47, Shrewsbury – 50,

BOYS’ HOCKEY – FEB. 2

Algonquin – 2, Marlborough – 3

Algonquin brought its contest with Marlborough to overtime last week, nearly avenging previous losses to the Panthers from earlier in this winter season.

Marlborough took the win though, handing Algonquin its second consecutive loss after a defeat at the hands of Westborough on Jan. 31.

GIRLS’ HOCKEY – FEB. 2

Algonquin – 10, Leominster – 2

Lauren O’Malley snagged a hat trick on a double-digit scoring day for her team’s offense.

This dominant victory marked a rebound for Algonquin after it suffered its first loss of the season on Jan. 22.

The team now sits with a win-loss record of 11-1-2.

The Algonquin girls basketball team beat Fitchburg on the big stage last week, claiming a victory in their segment of the Andrew James Lawson Invitational, which was played at the TD Garden in Boston.

Algonquin found a way to win, though, taking the victory on a goal by Nick D’Angelo in sudden-death overtime.

This snapped a four-game losing streak that had stretched back to Jan. 19.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL – FEB. 1

Hudson – 61, Littleton – 40

Brady Stuart helped lead Hudson past Littleton on Feb. 1, scoring 19 points in a 61-40 win.

Hudson’s win-loss record now sits at 10-4. The Hawks are due to take on Maynard and Lunenburg on Feb. 8 and Feb. 11 respectively to round out their regular-season schedule.

Hudson honored seniors Angel Bethea and Mary Stefanski after their win over Fitchburg on Senior Night, last week.

Audrey Lenox helped lead the Hawks toward victory in the game itself, notching 17 points. Sam Collette tacked on an additional 10 points.

This win helped Hudson improve its win-loss record to 11-3, marking a fourth consecutive win after a loss to Quabbin on Jan. 24.

Hudson set a season high in terms of points scored on Feb. 5 despite their loss to Marlborough.

It was a particularly strong day on the beam for the Hawks with Jennie Cassidy scoring a 9.35 in that portion of the meet. Autumn Garceau scored a 9.05 while Kylie Dobeck, notched a 9.45 score.

“An incredible team performance,” noted Athletic Director Jessica Winders in a tweet after the meet concluded.

The latest in a line of hotly contested games this winter, this contest saw Algonquin and Marlborough play down to the wire, dragging things into overtime in front of a raucous crowd.

The win preserved Marlborough’s undefeated record through last week, additionally teeing up the Panthers for a 8-0 victory over Lexington on Feb. 5
