Shrewsbury girls hockey beats Boston Latin to win Giordano Christmas Classic

SHREWSBURY – At least one Christmas tradition came late this year for the co-op Shrewsbury girls hockey team.

The team found victory, nonetheless, nabbing a 2-0 win over Boston Latin on Thursday to secure a win in the annual Giordano Christmas Classic at Murphy Rink in Boston.

Defenseman Aislinn Bennett opened the scoring for Colonials in the first period.

The teams played a scoreless second period before forward Kaci Ryder then tacked on an insurance goal to double her squad’s lead with just under 8:30 left in the game.

Maintaining the shutout, Shrewsbury goalie Risa Montoya was later honored with the tournament’s MVP recognition.

The Christmas Classic was originally scheduled to take place on Dec. 26 and 27. It was postponed amid then surging COVID-19 case rates throughout the region, though.

Moving forward this past week, this new schedule set up a unique situation for the Colonials, who claimed their Christmas Classic title just over 24 hours after a win in the Newburyport Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

Shrewsbury will now be back in action on Wednesday for the first round of MIAA state  tournament play against Auburn.
