NORTHBOROUGH – LEC, GEI consultants, and the state’s Department of Conservation & Recreation will host an information session on July 11 for the Hop Brook Flood Control Area Remediation project in Northborough.

This project includes remediation of contaminated soil/sediments and removal of debris in a portion of the flood control area.

The 191-acre Hop Brook Flood Control Area is vacant land operated by the DCR as a flood storage facility within the southwestern portion of Northborough. A 9-plus-acre portion of the site was historically used as an auto salvage yard and dumping of materials, resulting in contamination within the soil and groundwater.

The project proposes to remove debris and contaminated soil/sediment between 0-5 feet below the surface within six areas identified in the 9-plus-acre acre site. Contaminated soil/sediment removal will occur within forested uplands (41,500 square feet) and wetlands (33,000 square feet), temporarily stockpiled on-site, and disposed of off-site.

Following removal of contaminated soil/sediment, upland and wetland remediation areas will be lined with permeable geotextile, backfilled with clean soil, replanted, seeded and restored.

The project is located within one mile of an environmental justice community located within Westborough.

The information session will take place at Northborough Free Library, 34 Main St., on Tuesday, July 11, from 4 to 8 p.m.
