Shrewsbury – The St. John's High School Pioneers hosted the Marlborough High School Panthers on Oct 26. ?St. John's scored first on a 73-yard pass from Drew Smiley to Michael McGillicuddy (Jack Coveney made the point-after). ?Marlborough scored before the end of the first quarter on a 9-yard pass from John Rumney to Matt Thall (point-after missed).
The Panthers owned the second quarter, with a 6-yard run from Jose Caquias (point-after by Kevin Chilin) and a Rumney 2-yard run (Chilin point-after) to take a 20-7 half-time lead.
In the third quarter, St. John's’ ?Drew Smiley put the only points on the board (Coveney kick).
In the fourth quarter, St. John's continued its momentum, tallying two scores from Smiley (37-yard run, Coveney point-after and 28-yard run, Coveney point-after). ?With time running out, St. John's scored one more time on a 1-yard run from Brad Sylvester (Coveney kick) to allow St. John's to win 35-20.
The win dropped Marlborough to the number three seed in the Division 2 Central Mass. Tournament while St. John's moved up to the number two seed.
